Discovering Your Dosha

Discovering Your Dosha

In case you need a refresher, Ayurveda is an ancient Hindu practice of medicine all about keeping balance between the body and mind, tailored unique for everyone individual person. You can find out more about Ayurveda here.

But first, Yoga! Ayurveda and yoga may seem like separate ideas but they’re actually deeply entwined. To put it simply, Ayurveda is a science and yoga is the practice used to implement it. Yoga is a natural way of healing used to inspire positivity and understanding towards the self, society, environment and the universe. When these two ideas are combined, it makes for a much richer experience in health and energy!

A very important aspect of Ayurveda is doshas. These are unique energies, representing the five elements that make up our physical and mental traits. Each person has all three doshas: vata, pitta and kapha but each individual has one or two dominant ones. If your dosha is out of balance, you may be experiencing feelings of unease and negativity depending on which one is dominant in you. Your dominant dosha depends on factors such as diet, appearance and personality. Luckily through both diet and yoga, your dosha can get easily back in order and you’ll be feeling more like your wonderful self in no time! We have the tips to help recognise your dominant dosha and get it back into balance, right here:

Vata

Linked to air and space, vata individuals are usually quick minded and enjoy movement but can often tire easily. They can also be very energetic and creative. When vata is out of balance, they may feel anxiety, dryness and experience insomnia. Increase intake of sweet fruits such as coconut, banana, avocado, mango, and berries to start feeling more like yourself again!

As for yoga focus on heavy breathing at a slow steady pace that will promote warmness and self-care. Make sure to be fluid with your poses and finish your session off with some quiet relaxation. You can find more tips for vata yoga right here!

Pitta

If you live life with passion and enthusiasm, then pitta based on fire and water is your dominant dosha! When unbalanced, you may be feeling symptoms such as anger and competitiveness. Foods including sweet fruits and vegetables such as zucchini, asparagus, cucumber and celery are your new best friends that will get you back to equilibrium!

Yoga is also a great way to release that heat and tension! Try out some chest opener poses to help you slow down and embrace patience.

Kapha

Based on the earth element, strength, loyalty and devotion are all characteristics of kapha dominated individuals. However it’s also simple to become dull cold and congested when you’re feeling out of sorts. To combat this, try reducing dairy and eating much more of tofu and juicy vegetables.

Find some stimulation from yoga! Sun salutations are perfect for kaphas who need to stretch and tone their muscles.

Life is all about balance! With a proper diet and regular exercise, you’ll be able to embrace all the most lovely and exciting parts of yourself and the universe! And it’s all thanks to yoga and Ayurveda! Don't forget you can read our guide all about Ayurveda here!
